Defining Ethics

Ethics are the moral principles and values that guide behavior and decisions. Going beyond preferences, ethics guide behavior when it affects another individual’s well-being.

Often, personal ethics help one decide between “right” and “wrong” actions. They also make decisions between two good choices easier when the best course of action is difficult to determine.

A good rule of thumb is that the relationship between the evaluator and study participants should be characterized by honesty, truth, and respect.
