Collecting and Handling Data

As you have learned in previous modules, conducting an evaluation can range from basic satisfaction surveys to complex experimental designs. To collect data, some programs require an Institutional Review Board (IRB) process or other certifications to do research with human subjects (study participants). However, data collected for program evaluation may not require IRB oversight. Be sure to check with your local institution regarding their policies defining and governing research or evaluation with human subjects.

Both IRB and other certification processes protect the rights of your study participants. Regardless of your institutions’ policies and procedures, when working with human subjects, your evaluation must be ethical. This section details the process for research with human subjects, important ethical considerations when conducting an evaluation, and the policies and procedures that guide evaluation.
