Science

This section includes instruments and scales that assess various aspects of Science. Areas addressed include: science process skills, confidence and interest in specific physics activities, attitudes toward science, female high school and college students' attitudes toward mathematics and science, and views and conceptions about scientific inquiry.

Instrument Description
Attitude Towards Science - TOSRA
(Middle and High School)

This 10-item instrument was developed to gather information on students’ attitudes towards science.

Attitude Towards Science Inquiry
(Grades Pre-Kindergarten-2)

This 5-item instrument was developed to assess Pre-K-2nd grade students’ views and conceptions about scientific inquiry, a key component of scientific literacy. Designed for children with limited reading and writing abilities.

Competency in Science
(Ages 12 and Older)

This 11-item scale was developed to measure the ability to practice the full cycle of steps in the scientific inquiry process. The inventory measures science process skills, not science content knowledge and is appropriate for measurement in programs that emphasize the process of science learning along with content. 
 

Confidence in Science Ability
(Middle School girls)

This 12-item instrument was developed to gather information on students’ confidence and interest in specific physics activities.

Engagement in Science
(Grade 8)

This 12 item scale is used to measure relationship between classroom instructional activities and student interests in a science career.

 

Interest in Science
(High School and College Women)

This 12-item scale was developed to measure female high school and college students’ attitudes toward mathematics and science.

Interest in Science
(Grade 5)

This 7-item scale is designed to measure multiple dimensions of student attitudes towards science including perception of the Science Teacher, Anxiety toward Science, Value of Science in Society, Self-concept of Science, Desire to do Science.

Stress and Confidence in Science Ability
(High School & College Age Girls)

This 16-item scale was developed to measure female high school and college students’ attitudes toward mathematics and science.
