Positive Youth Development

This section includes instruments and scales that assess various aspects of Positive Youth Development. Areas addressed include: The 5 C’s (Competence, Connection, Confidence, Caring and Character), the importance of doing what is best and right, and the importance of civic engagement.

Instrument Description
Alcohol and Other Drug Use
( High School )

This scale includes 21 items that are grouped into three sections: alcohol use, marijuana use, and other drug use.

Caring
(Middle School)

The 9-item scale measures one of the five theoretical "Cs" that are proposed to be related to positive youth development.

Personal Values
(Middle School)

This 5-item scale includes questions that are focused on the importance of doing what is best and right.   
Personal Values is a subcomponent of the Character factor.  One of the five theoretical "Cs" that are proposed to be related to positive youth development.

Positive Youth Development Student Questionnaire
(Ages 10 and Older)

This 77-item student questionnaire measures the 5 C’s (Competence, Connection, Confidence, Caring and Character), plus demographics.

Social Conscience
(Middle School)

This 6-item scale focuses on the importance of civic engagement.   Social Conscience is a subcomponent of the Character factor.  One of the five theoretical "Cs" that are proposed to be related to positive youth development. The publishers request that all research using this instrument be shared with them.
