Parenting

This section includes instruments and scales that assess various aspects of Parenting. Areas addressed include: risk for abusive/neglecting parenting attitudes/ practices, parenting behaviors and attitudes, positive involvement with children, supervision and monitoring, use of positive discipline techniques, consistency in the use of such discipline, use of corporal punishment, satisfaction with their own child rearing skills, satisfaction with the degree of assistance spouses provided for child rearing, and willingness of parents to listen to and share feelings and experiences with their children.

Instrument Description
Adult/Adolescent Parenting Inventory-2
(Teen and Adult Parents/Caregivers)

This 40-item inventory is used to provide an index of risk for abusive and neglecting parenting attitudes and practices.

Alabama Parenting Questionnaire
(Parents of Children Ages 6-18)

This 42-item questionnaire measures five dimensions of parenting: (1) positive involvement with children, (2) supervision and monitoring, (3) use of positive discipline techniques, (4) consistency in the use of such discipline and (5) use of corporal punishment.

Encouragement of Behavioral Freedom
(Adolescents)

This 6-item scale measures children’s reports of their parents’ encouragement of behavioral freedom towards them.

Family Relations and Cohesion
(Parents and Adolescents)

This 6-item scale measures family interaction and cohesion.

Nurturance
(Parents of Children Ages 2-18)

This 18-item subscale represents an endorsement of flexible child-rearing attitudes and practices. The items show the willingness of parents to listen to and share feelings and experiences with their children.

Parent Education Survey
(Parents )

This 10-item pre and post-test surveys that assess parenting behaviors and attitudes. It should only be used to assess parents who have received at least six hours of content delivery.

Parent Performance
(Parents)

This 10-item subscale is designed to measure respondents’ satisfaction with their own child rearing skills and is part of the larger Cleminshaw—Guidubaldi Parent Satisfaction Scale that consists of five subscales.

Parental Satisfaction
(Parents)

This 9-item scale relates to “affective” dimensions of parenting including feelings of frustration, anxiety, and poor motivation for the role of parent.

Parental Support of Daughter's Activity
(Parents of Girls Ages 8-10)

This 6-item measure assesses parental support of daughters' activity levels.

Spouse Support

This subscale 10-item measures respondents’ satisfaction with the degree of assistance spouses provided for child rearing and is part of the larger Cleminshaw—Guidubaldi Parent Satisfaction Scale that consists of five subscales.

For parents of children ages 3-4, this 25-item questionnaire is divided between 5 five item scales: 1) emotional symptoms, 2) conduct problems, 3) hyperactivity/ inattention, 4) peer relationship problems, and 5) pro-social behavior.

For parents of children ages 4-10, this 25-item questionnaire is divided between 5 five item scales: 1) emotional symptoms, 2) conduct problems, 3) hyperactivity/ inattention, 4) peer relationship problems, and 5) pro-social behavior.
